What actually happens at a baby massage class?

What actually happens at a baby massage class?

By Amanda – Tiny Hands Big Adventures

If you’ve been thinking about coming to a baby massage class but aren’t quite sure what to expect, this is for you. Because not knowing what you’re walking into… especially with a baby in tow… is enough to put anyone off.

Baby massage classes can sound quite formal and strict. They’re not… At least not here.

Here’s an honest picture of what a session at Tiny Hands Big Adventures baby massage group actually looks like, from the moment you arrive to the moment you head home.

Before you arrive

You don’t need to bring much… A muslin, a nappy change just in case, and yourself… That’s genuinely it.

There’s no need to wear anything special, just something comfortable that you don’t mind getting a little oil on. We use an organic, cold pressed sunflower seed oil. It’s gentle on baby’s skin, fragrance-free, and we always do a patch test before we start so you can feel confident before we begin.

There’s parking nearby, so you don’t need to worry about arriving flustered after a long walk.

And please don’t stress about timing feeds perfectly or making sure your baby is in a particular mood before you come… Babies don’t read the schedule…

Neither do we, we work with your baby we don’t expect them to work with us… just come as you are.

When you walk in

Sessions are small… Intentionally small.

You don’t walk into a big echoing hall with rows of parents and babies all looking at you. It’s a calm, quiet space. Mats are laid out, blankets are soft, the pace is unhurried. You’ll be welcomed in, shown where to settle, and given time to get comfortable before anything starts.

If you’ve been to a big baby group before and found it overwhelming… this is different. There’s space to breathe here.

During the session

Each week focuses on a different area of the body. Legs, feet and tummy one week, chest, arms and hands the next, then face, then back.

Alongside all of this, you’ll also get the chance to learn a dedicated colic routine, which works gently to support your baby’s own digestive system through massage and baby yoga movements.

Building it up slowly like this means you’re never trying to learn everything at once. By the end of the course it starts to feel really natural, and you’ll have a full set of techniques you can use at home.

You’ll also receive a PDF of all the strokes to keep. So if you’re at home on an evening trying to remember which direction the tummy strokes go, you’ve got it right there.

And throughout the course you have full WhatsApp support from me. If you’re at home and you’re not quite sure about a stroke, just ask. That support doesn’t disappear the moment the session ends.

What about if my baby cries?

They might. Babies might at some point during a session.

Crying is how babies communicate, and in this space nobody is going to look over at you or make you feel like you should be doing something differently.

Babies cry. You don’t need to apologise for that here.

Can I feed during the session?

Absolutely. Feeding always comes first. If your baby needs a feed, feed them. There’s no pressure to keep up or rush back. The session moves around you, not the other way around. Bottle or breastfeeding all is welcome… we are a safe feeding space.

What if my baby is asleep?

This one comes up a lot. If your baby happens to fall asleep before or during the session, we have demonstration dolls you can use so you don’t miss out on learning the strokes. You can practise on the doll and then try it at home when your baby is ready. You won’t leave without the knowledge and empty-handed.

What if I miss a week?

Life with a baby is unpredictable. We know that… Every session includes a recap of the previous week’s strokes, so you’re never playing catch-up. And with the PDF and WhatsApp support alongside you, missing one session doesn’t mean missing out.

Can I come back for another course?

Yes… and we encourage it.

Baby massage isn’t just about learning the techniques. The sessions are as much for you as they are for your baby. It’s a space to feel safe, supported and held. Somewhere familiar, without the overwhelm. Somewhere you can come back to.

Mums do return to us, and that’s not because they’ve forgotten the strokes. It’s because they’ve found a space that feels good and safe to be in. A room full of people who just get it.

Is it worth it?

This is the question most parents are quietly asking before they book, and it deserves a real answer.

Baby massage classes aren’t just a nice thing to do ( although they are that too ) There’s a genuine body of research behind them.

Studies have shown that regular massage raises oxytocin levels, the bonding hormone, in both mum and baby, while lowering cortisol, the stress hormone. That’s not just a calmer baby. It’s a calmer you.

Research also points to benefits for infant sleep, digestion, motor development, and the parent-child relationship more broadly. For mums experiencing postnatal depression or feeling disconnected from their baby, infant massage has been shown to be particularly helpful in rebuilding that bond.

The techniques you learn in these sessions are yours to keep. You can use them at bedtime, after a bath, during a fussy evening, or any time your baby needs soothing. That’s a skill for life, not just for the course.

After the massage

There’s time to chat, ask questions and just sit for a minute before heading back out into the world. Some of the most useful conversations happen in that time… questions about sleep, feeding, how things are going at home, they really help.

You’re not just learning massage techniques. You’re in a room with other parents who are in exactly the same stage of life as you and that matters.

Which session is right for us?

We run two different courses and they’re both a little different in feel, so it’s worth knowing which one might suit you best.

Our Introduction to Baby Massage Course at Hellifield

This is a five week course running on the same day and time each week. Each session builds on the last, working through a different area of the body week by week. It’s structured, gentle, and by the end of the five weeks you’ll have the full routine under your belt.

It’s open to babies from six weeks old.

Our Baby Massage and Mums Connection Circle at Skipton

This one runs in four week blocks and is a little different in feel. Sessions are two hours long and alongside the full baby massage routine there’s sensory play, a footprint canvas keepsake to take home, and an introduction to basic baby signing.

The signing side of things might feel a bit ahead of where you are right now… and that’s fine. Words like more, finished, food and drink aren’t needed yet. But as your baby grows and starts to understand the world before they have the words to express it, having those signs in your toolkit can make a real difference. It can reduce a lot of frustration on both sides. You’ll take home a laminated booklet to refer back to whenever you’re ready.

The Skipton session also welcomes babies from birth. For those very early weeks, before six weeks, the focus is less on the full massage routine and more on you. Your wellbeing, gentle holds, basic touch, being in a room where you don’t have to explain how hard it is. The massage routine comes in fully as your baby grows into it, and of course in the meantime we have the demonstration dolls for you to use to do the routine on if you like.

Both sessions are course-booked rather than drop-in. That’s intentional. Being surrounded by the same faces each week, building familiarity, knowing the space… that’s part of what makes us work.

Before I go

If you’ve been putting off joining baby massage because you’re worried your baby will cry, or you won’t keep up, or it just won’t be for you… that’s exactly the kind of worry we want to put to rest.

Come as you are. Bring your baby as they are. That’s more than enough.

Our baby massage classes run weekly in Skipton and Hellifield. The Skipton connection circle welcomes babies from birth and our Hellifield introduction course welcomes babies from six weeks. Both groups are small, relaxed and unhurried.
